My Animation of The Peak -room divider

I'm happy to finally present an animation of my design work. It was not easiest thing to do, but defenitely one of the most exciting learning experiences that I've had so far.

3DS Max -day

Today has all been about the digital modelling of the room divider. I chose the final shape of it and tried to rend the images of it. The plan is also to rend an animated video of the product, but we'll see how it goes.

Digital modelling

While I'm waiting the library images to rend, I've been modelling the room divider and I feel quite good about it. I would like to test the shape to be sure that the divider is usable in real life so I need to find some cardboard somewhere...

I also found a final material for the room divider: synthetic felt. Material allows the product to be light and the sound absorbing qualities are good. There would be no need to use any kind of complicated construction inside the felt because it will be compressed tight. Below there is a image of a room divider called Fold by Studio Segers and Mookum, my product will be made with the same principle as the Fold.

Rendering...

I have been working with Artlantis 5 with my library and I found out a "funny" thing. To make a iVisit3D -file that I was planning to do, it takes to rend about 800 hours! 800 hours! And only with one 360 degree camera. So I'm really truly hoping that they would have Artlantis in the computers at school. Otherwise the rended images will have to be enough. (It takes my laptop about 17 hours to rend one image...)

What it comes to the room divider that I'm supposed to design, I feel distressed. The modelling with the new program is time consuming and I really don't know anything about the manufacturing and making the room divider. The shape seems to be too complicated and too expensive to produce... Maybe more research will help...

Library, library, library

I'm finally close the point that I can add the real materials to the library and start rendering. This is what I got done today.

Okay, surprise surprise I'm lost again. I have no clue how to built this thing, should I change the shape or what? I definitely don't want to give up. So I'm going to leave it for a while hoping the idea just comes when it is supposed to come and concentrate on the library. Get it done and then the last few weeks concentrate on the room divider. Time is the enemy...

Progress and fresh feedback

Last Friday I was able to have a talk with David Hartwell about my library. I got loads of new ideas and standpoints about the project. We talked about the exits of the building, lighting, construction methods and materials. I got so many good points and reminders about how to design a space. I'm truly thankful for that talk. So, inspired by that talk I continued my modelling and added another lift and staircase to the library. 

      I also started to 3D-model my room divider, I hope I get it done on Monday at school so I can add it to my library. 

For the new staircase I had to find out about the dimensions for strecher in case of an energency. Photo is from Finnish Construction Knolidge -files.

Full steam ahead!

On Monday I finally got an idea about the legs and the frame of the room divider. Next step is the 3D-modelling. The library is getting ready too. I'm in a stage where I'm choosing the furniture, soon I'll be ready for rendering the images and a panorama file...

Towards the unknown

One of my aims here is to learn some new 3D-modelling program. Today I tried to get hang of 3ds Max with poor results. I need to watch some tutorials from Youtube...

An idea from a football match

Yesterday was a productive day in my work. However I felt a bit insecure about my wall materials so I was happy to go a Leeds United football game and come up with an idea. I find my inspiration from everyday life so I wasn't surprised when I found my inpiration for a wall material from the seats of the stadium which created this interesting pattern that reminded me of a roof panels that I had seen in Finland. It's fun to solve problems when you're not deliberately solving them.

Feeling lost and found

So last week was a panic week. I really felt like I have no idea what I'm doing or how and why I'm doing it. But I came to a conclusion about what I really, truly want to do, and that is the library. I am a interior architecture student after all. I need to do a project what I believe will help me to be a professional interior designer in the future, a project that will support my portfolio and my studies back home in Kuopio. 

         Now I am going to design the room divider but in my own terms. I will design it using the knowlidge that I've got from product design but I won't make the final model of it. I will use CAD to visualize it ( I want to learn a new 3D-modelling programme. ) and I'll explore how the structure will work but the main focus is on how to use the product in my library environment and creating the library space.

        I got a huge amount of support from my tutor ( thank you ) and we decided to go back to my first idea of the room divider. So now I'm looking into the size and the form more closely to make the product work. I'm also modelling the library again. When it comes to the library design I concentrate on the different functions in the space and the materials. The aim is to create an stressfree environment for working and studying.

         I'm happy with my project now. :)
